The word “pneumatic” means containing or operated by air or gas under pressure.

Pneumatic seals require minimal lubrication when exposed to air to create a tight seal.

Pneumatic seals are typically found in rotary or reciprocating applications, most often cylinders and valves. This type of seal does not perform well under high pressure, but can function at high operating speeds where pressure is not a concern.

Pneumatic seals essentially operate the same way hydraulic seals in a cylinder operate. Pneumatic seals come as piston seals, rod seals, cushion seals, scrapers, and wear rings.
