What Is a Simmerring®?

The Simmerring®—a type of radial shaft seal—was invented by Freudenberg-NOK Sealing Technologies in 1932 and has since become a trusted solution in sealing technology. This innovative seal bridges the gap between rotating and stationary components, effectively keeping fluids in and contaminants out. Whether used in pumps, gearboxes, or automotive systems, the Simmerring® oil seal offers long-lasting, reliable performance. With a range of sizes, materials, and sealing lip designs, it is engineered for durability and efficiency across various industries and environments.

Common Simmerring® Radial Shaft Seal Types

Standard Program Simmerring®: Offers reliable performance and outstanding versatility, thanks to its wide range of sizes and designs. This adaptability makes it ideal for various applications, including gearboxes, axles, pumps, and motors.

Premium Sine Seal (PSS): Featuring a unique design and sealing behavior, the Premium Sine Seal delivers more than twice the service life of a standard sealing system. Its innovative design also enhances equipment performance by reducing friction, minimizing power loss, and actively preventing internal contamination within the sealing system.

Oil Seals MSS 1: A modular sealing system designed for industrial applications like gearboxes. Its unique design protects against wear and contaminants within the sealing system. Additionally, it effectively seals low-viscosity or gaseous media by securely fitting to the housing hole, ensuring reliable performance.

Cassette Seals: Combining a Simmerring® with an optimized wear sleeve, these seals are designed for applications exposed to high stress, such as construction or agricultural equipment. Advanced elastomers enable optimal sealing performance without the need for a spring, reducing friction and withstanding high temperatures for reliable operation.

Medium-Pressure Seals BABSL and PPS: These seals have been a standard choice in many high-pressure applications for decades. The PPS seal, in particular, offers the added benefit of outstanding performance in pressures above 1.5 bar and at high circumferential speeds.

Simmerring® Modification Program: This program offers comprehensive solutions, including modifications to Freudenberg’s highly engineered profiles, in-house developed materials, and standard or custom sizes. The Simmerring® Modification Program allows you to customize the seal to your exact requirements with options like modified springs, backup rings, standard or pre-greased dust lips, PTFE excluder lips, non-woven excluder lips, FKM plus coating, and eCON electrically conductive non-woven washers, among other tailor-made features.

Benefits of Choosing a Simmerring®

  • Specialized designs reduce friction by up to 20% to 55% over standard designs creating less impact on the system and increasing service life
  • Catalog Simmering® generates up to 54% lower power loss in comparison with competitor’s seals reducing energy usage and overall costs
  • Incredible reliability and service life reducing downtime for maintenance
  • Easy mounting of the Simmerring® makes seal replacement during maintenance cycles more efficient
  • Exceptional performance often increases the efficiency and performance of your equipment
  • High level of adaptability to temperature, pressures, media, and more with catalog and modification program
