A manufacturer of orthopedic surgical power tools was redesigning an existing product to achieve approximately 50% higher rotational speeds while maintaining the reliability required for medical applications. The upgraded design placed significantly greater demands on the sealing system. The customer needed a solution that could withstand higher RPM, reduce friction, extend seal life, and maintain the same—or lower—leakage as the previous design. The application also presented a unique challenge: the sealing system had to perform reliably through repeated autoclave sterilization cycles while sealing under both dynamic and static operating conditions.
After reviewing the application's operating conditions and performance goals, Wyatt Seal worked alongside the customer's engineering and purchasing teams to evaluate potential sealing options. Leveraging years of sealing application experience, our Technical Account Manager recommended a three-piece sealing assembly consisting of a PTFE seal, stainless steel energizer, and outer O-ring.
This configuration was selected for several reasons. The PTFE sealing element offered the low-friction performance needed to accommodate higher rotational speeds while helping extend service life. The stainless steel energizer maintained consistent sealing force throughout operation, and the outer O-ring simplified installation while helping protect the housing from scratches and damage during assembly. Together, the three components provided a durable, application-specific solution that met the customer's demanding performance requirements.
Because the product is intended for use in orthopedic surgical tools, the sealing assembly is undergoing an extensive qualification process that includes rigorous performance testing and FDA validation before production release.
The three-piece sealing assembly is currently performing as intended during validation testing, achieving the customer's objectives for improved sealing performance at higher operating speeds while reducing overall costs compared to the previous seal technology.
